There are places in Rome where the city seems to disappear. The Appian Way is one of them! Away from the busy centre, the ancient road runs through open countryside, lined with stone ruins, tall grasses and traces of the Roman world that has surrounded it for more than two thousand years. It feels remarkably removed from modern Rome, despite being only a short journey away. For this couple, that sense of escape was exactly what made it right!

A Journey Out of the City
A car took them away from the centre and towards the Appian Way, where the afternoon was beginning to soften into golden light. They walked along the ancient road without knowing exactly where the proposal would happen. Our roman photographer was already waiting further along, blending naturally into the surroundings with a camera in hand, just another visitor enjoying the historic landscape. There was no obvious setup and nothing to suggest that this walk was leading towards a particular moment. Then they reached the right place!

The Question
Among the ancient stones and quiet countryside, the moment finally arrived. He stopped, turned towards her and went down on one knee. The surprise was genuine, and so was everything that followed. The photographer could capture the surprise proposal from a discreet distance, allowing the couple to remain completely immersed in what was happening. For a few moments, the ancient road became their own private setting. Then came the laughter, the embrace and the happiness of knowing that they had just become engaged!

Into Golden Hour
After the proposal, we continued along the Appian Way together. Now with a different feeling to the walk. The tension had disappeared, replaced by the easy happiness of a newly engaged couple. As the light became warmer, the ancient road and surrounding landscape took on a completely different character. The engagement session unfolded naturally from there, moving between the old stone road, the countryside and the remarkable remains that make this part of Rome so distinctive.

Rome, Far From the Crowds
The Appian Way offers something increasingly difficult to find in Rome: space. There are no grand fountains surrounded by crowds or famous landmarks competing for attention. Instead, there is time to walk, talk and enjoy the moment together. That sense of privacy was what made this proposal so memorable.
The road itself has been carrying people through the Roman landscape for around 2,300 years. Today, it offers a very different kind of journey — one that can begin with a quiet walk and end with an engagement. And sometimes, the most unforgettable proposal in Rome is the one that takes you away from Rome for a while.
