A trip to Albania means travelling across images of contradictions of our time. On one side the downfall of the communist regime revealed deceptions which left disappointment and environmental scars. On the other side the neo-capitalism mirage overwhelms the entire society, but only a few are able to keep the pace. In between, a multitude of people that live on an unstable balance between past and future re-inventing each day their own existence. Everything seems incomplete, broken, while city life flows quickly: photos of multinational company advertisement signs mounted on abandoned infrastructures, animals that rummage in the garbage, crumbling buildings, broken down roads. And this is what is visible from the picture of the streets. More profound problems are concealed deeper. Corruption, violence and illegality. What is left? Images of man’s inventiveness, friendships, pictures of a kind gesture, a smile, the family structure, a game of domino, children… the purity of nature.
Un viaggio in Albania significa attraversare le contraddizioni della nostra epoca. Da una parte il crollo del regime comunista ha svelato gli inganni lasciando delusioni e cicatrici ambientali. Dall’altra il miraggio del neo capitalismo investe tutta la società, ma sono in pochi quelli che possono stare al passo. In mezzo, una moltitudine di persone che vivono in bilico tra il passato e il futuro inventando ogni giorno la propria esistenza. Tutto appare incompiuto, spezzato, mentre la vita in città scorre veloce: cartelli pubblicitari di aziende su infrastrutture abbandonate, animali che rovistano nell’immondizia, palazzi fatiscenti, strade dissestate. E questo è solo lo scenario della strada. Dietro si celano problematiche più profonde. Corruzione, violenza e illegalità. Cosa rimane? L’inventiva dell’uomo, l’amicizia tra le persone, la famiglia, i bambini…la purezza della natura.
